Steve Rook took us into nature by showing us his forged flowers and plants.

Steve's workpieces are as true as possible to nature and show what is possible with steel. Over 35 years of experience can be seen in the quality of the workpieces. It is also interesting to learn from Steve how he conserves his workpieces. This is mainly done by galvanizing them, which has over 35 years proven to be the best method in cold and wet climates. Steve lives in Scotland, a region ideally suited to testing in cold and wet conditions. The flowers and plants have many nooks, crannies and crevices and it is important that the preservation also has quality in this places.

That is why you have to take the galvanising process into account at the design stage. Prior to galvanising the work pieces need to be as clean as possible, heavy forge scale can be removed by flame cleaning with an oxygen burner, it can also be worth considering sand blasting to get a really clean surface. If cutting oils have been used when drilling holes oil residues should also be cleaned off. When the job is at the galvanising works the metalwork is first dipped into an acid bath for cleaning, it is then rinsed and fluxed and finally dipped into molten zinc bath. During the post treatment it is especially important to carefully remove any solidified droplets of zinc.

The final part of the process if the work is going to be painted is to apply a T wash Solution / mordant solution. This process oxidises the surface of the zinc and prevents oil based paints flaking off after a period of time.

The T wash solution can also be applied just for its aesthetic appearance as it sends the surface of the zinc an attractive mottled grey colour that can be seen in the images of the work.

The next Treff will be on the 19th of July 19:00 CEST

We are looking forward to it!
