A colorful evening with steel

Anna Bobisuthi from California -member of CBA- showed us how to use tempering colors to paint on steel.

We all know the use of the tempering colors in tool manufacturing. You can also use these heat treatments to color workpieces. For example, by using the torch, you can ‘paint’ with fire. “Depending on how hot the metal gets, there’s a whole spectrum of colors from brown to purples, red, orange, yellow, and then to black. The trick is to stop before you get the color you want because the metal is still hot … like food will continue to cook even after you take it off the heat.”

You don't need more than a few simple tools such as a torch and pliers for the job. And for pre-processing the workpiece surface you can use sandblasting, sanding, various types of grinders or polish.

You can apply the techniques she presents to different types of metal such as ordinary steel, stainless steel, copper, etc. The heat coloring can be used for outdoor pieces. The sun and the heat have no impact on the colors. But it is important to apply an appropriate surface treatment to protect the metal.

Anna found 16 very engaged and enthusiastic listeners from 10 countries, with whom he shared her experiences and answered just as many questions.

We will make another post, when the recording is published.

The next Treff is on April 24.
Start: 19.00 CET
Room Open: 18.40 CEST
