About making vessels by Monica Kjellman-Chapin from Norway.

After an instructive lecture on the relationship between architecture and ironwork, this evening was about a series of making vessels.

Monica gave an inspiring explanation of how she uses industrially manufactured steel tubes, preferably rectangular, in beautiful decorative works of art. The line of art started just after a dramatic moment in her life with a self-examination of what she has in her power to make ironwork. As a result, Monica is constantly working with recycled materials that she reforges.

The pieces, designed by Monica herself with an eye for detail, are made in a combination of traditional forging techniques and the use of modern workshop equipment. The workpiece is hand-hammered and provided with a layer of surface finish. A piece of straight up and down craftsmanship. With an eye for the traditional forged detail, like riveting combined with fastening techniques such as tapping holes and screwing. To connect the round parts at right angles.

In one piece the industrial weld present in the steel profiles is artfully combined with damask steel. The dimensions are based on the eye, in particular the mutual relationships of the various parts are well coordinated.

For coloring some of the vessels, the technique of using colored wax crayons is allowed to flow on a surface heated with a gas torch. When the steel surface is pre-treated by sandblasting, this provides a better base for the colouring. Another technique is the use of tempering colours. During the follow-up, another coloring technique was suggested by -one of- the group, namely a mix of white shellac, denatured alcohol and ceramic powders such as iron oxide.

An end product of small robust works of art that are very meaningful. There's a soul in it.

Monica found 11 very engaged listeners from 6 countries with whom he shared his experiences and answered just as many questions.

We will make another post, when the recording is published.
