Developing further as a Blacksmith by Patrick Beck

Harjoitus tekee mestarin

Means: Practive makes the master (Practice makes perfect).
In German: Übung macht den Meister.

In Patrick's lecture, the emphasis was on that.

In addition to the clear and enthusiastic presentation, the interesting discussion yielded several tips.

  • Look closely at how beginners and advanced people work.
  • You may see something that you are not doing right and that you never knew about.
  • Think carefully about how you do something and look back at how you did it. Could it have been done differently?
  • Practice lots of basic techniques.
  • Teaching a skill to others
  • Look closely at old works, examine them and try to copy the way they were made.
  • For example, draw out the connections so that each step in the process is embedded in your mind.
  • Attend many conferences and forging events.
  • Learn to observe your own results while working. Learn from your own results.
  • Take the correct measurements of workpieces and starting materials and record them.
  • Take notes while you work and observe.
  • Study old textbooks and try to copy the techniques.

The best advice I ever got was: keep asking questions. How, what, why?

From beginning to end were 19 very engaged listeners from 10 countries with whom experiences were shared and questions answered.
