Powerhammer tooling with Steve Rook

After the presentation from Niklas Wespel about how to install the powerhammer now it is time to talk about how to use it including with the right tools.

Steve had prepared an interesting instructional film and is recommended to watch.
The film provides information about the tools you can use with a powerhammer for:
Splitting the bar using a chisel, opening an eye with the punch and using the monkey tool.
The making of hinges, halving joints and the spreading of a bar are also clearly illustrated.

During the 'question time', the making of the so-called tenon tool and the hardening of the surface of this tool – case harding- were discussed in detail.

Case hardening -at 900 degrees Celsius- is done to prevent too much deformation during use.
You use the casehardening compund (for example 'cherry-red' or Angele Aufstreuhärtepulver) for the intended surface to perfect the hardening process.

For making various powerhammer tools Steve uses mild steel but also the so-called Atlantic-33 steel. Typical British steel made for the mining industry but no longer available. Also know as Flutagon.

ATLANTIC 33 NON-TEMPERING STEEL Is a new departure alloy steel, relatively low in carbon. The steel combines hardness and toughness with heat and fatigue resistance. It is made in the electric furnace from selected materials with expert care and supervision. Continued and painstaking research makes ATLANTIC 33 NON-TEMPERING STEEL more economical and more efficient.

With some extra skills from the blacksmith, all of the tools shown can be used well under the fly-press.

A very enthusiastically presented lecture with interesting examples in video and photo.

Steve found 11 very engaged listeners from 7 countries with whom he shared his experiences and answered just as many questions.

Thanks to the cooperation with ABANA we will be publishing the recording of this Treff in not too far future.

The next Treff is on September16 with Caitlin morris.
Start: 19.00 CEST
Room Open: 18.40 CEST
