Recording Treff with Mariano Garabato

Verijero

The Verijero knife is a widely used knife in Argentina, with its origin from Spain (Canary Islands). The Argentinians took over the good qualities of this knife, but further perfected it according to their own working conditions.

The verijero is a knife of no more than 15 cm of blade that is given general use in the Argentine Uruguayan and Chilean rural environment. It is used for everything that a knife can be used in rural and domestic tasks. Thus, it serves so much to eat, to coat an animal, to chop tobacco and even scratching their backs or as toothpicks. As they say in the field, "it serves as much to open a meeting as to close an argument."

Our team member Mariano Garabato shared his best practices on forging blades and what can go wrong in the process. He explained the several steps during the forging process which create a better quality blade. After choosing the right steel quality, consult the Iron-Carbon Balance diagram to be able to perform the correct heat treatments. You have to take into account that an experienced knife smith needs a heat of 7 to forge the blade

It is important to find the right forging heat for the selected steel. Forging too cold is not good. Not too hot either. Forging should be done calmly to avoid material breakage. A common mistake in forging is forging too cold, creating a pattern of crack propagation. With the so-called dog head hammer, you can achieve the best results.

Mariano found 10 active listeners from 8 countries, with whom he shared his experience in practicing this technique as a profession. Enjoy the view of Mariano‘s presentation with many enlightening photos and drawings on youtube!
